We didn’t want to do it so soon – since we just published a post about Twitter a few days ago – but we had to share with you compelling new numbers about where the microblogging phenomenon is headed.
Since it’s better to cut straight to the chase, here’s what reputable sources are saying:
eMarketer projects that the number of Twitter users will jump to 18.1 million in 2010, representing 10.8 percent of Internet users. Last year, six million users were on Twitter, and by the end of this year, double that amount is expected. Talk about exponential growth!
But perhaps that‘s the power of Oprah – we know firsthand how influential she can be!
comScore reported that Twitter.com drew 4 million unique visitors from home, work and college/university locations in February 2009, up from 340,000 a year earlier – a 1,086 percent increase.
Nielsen Online reported 7 million unique visitors to Twitter.com during the month, up even higher – 1,381 percent – from 475,000 the prior year.
The Compete figures were higher for the month charted, and according to its latest figures, Twitter had over 14 million unique users in March 2009.
comScore also reported a surge in March. After months of double-digit growth, traffic to Twitter.com accelerated 131 percent to 9.3 million visitors for the month.
Why do these numbers differ so distinctly? The answer is simple: As eMarketer puts it, “the number of Twitter users is considerably greater than the number of visitors to Twitter.com, as a result of the multiple access points for the service (for example, mobile devices and desktop apps).”
Whether people simply visited Twitter because of all the attention it’s getting, or they’re using the service to spread news and information, one thing’s for certain – Twitter has taken America by storm. And it’s one that doesn’t seem likely to blow over anytime soon.
